Nestled on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple revers the feminine power of Goddess Kali. Founded in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, the temple was built following a dream from the Goddess Kali herself, prompting Rashmoni to build the temple.

The Dakshineswar Kali Temple showcases the traditional ‘navaratna’ or nine spires style of Bengal architecture, intricately designed to accommodate the spacious courtyards, rooms, and corridors within. The main temple, housing the idol of Goddess Bhavatarini, an aspect of Kali, stands on a high platform, surrounded by twelve identical Shiva temples laid out in a row to its east, embodying the eternal bond between Shiva and Kali.

The temple includes a large bathing ghat, several shrines, and a room once used by the renowned mystic and saint, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

The mythology of Kali represents the destruction of evil and the protection of her devotees. The temple’s Kali Puja, draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists yearly, becoming a place not just for religious worship but a beacon of devotion.
